Collecting the 19th century

Museological and archaeological perspectives fromEurope and Latin America, Leiden University, October 17th, 2016
.

The event put together colleagues working on the anthropological collections made in 19th century by European museums, using material collected in Americas. The event made me think about my own work as a linguist who describe indigenous languages: is the documentation of indigenous languages of Americas a continuity of the 19th century expeditions? Is  digital database a modern version of museum collections? How can we use the activity of documenting languages and registering cultures to have a stronger impact in the valorization of cultural diversity?  How can we use the activity of documenting languages and registering cultures to have a stronger impact in the day-by-day lives of the communities with whom we work?
